NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — The state of Tennessee attempted to end the life of Christa Pike, an inmate on its death row, and did not. Two syringes of pentobarbital were administered during the execution attempt. Pike survived. The attempt did not proceed further. She has been moved to a hospital, where, her attorney says, staff are providing "life-saving measures."
Pike, convicted in 1996 of the 1995 murder of fellow student Colleen Slemmer, is the only woman on Tennessee's death row. The state's account of the attempt arrived in the vocabulary of procedure. "The process was carried out in accordance with established protocol," said Dale Hutto, Deputy Commissioner of Communications for the Department of Correction. Asked whether the sentence had been carried out, Hutto said the agency "does not characterize outcomes in real time." He confirmed that the sentence "remains in force."
The hospital's account arrived in the vocabulary of care. "Our clinical teams are doing everything possible for the patient," said Marcy Quillen, Senior Director of Media Relations. The care is provided at state expense. So was the pentobarbital. Neither speaker cited the other's document. Both documents describe the same body.
This is the distance between briefing and event. In the briefing, pentobarbital is an instrument, and two syringes complete a sentence. In the event, pentobarbital is a diagnosis, and two syringes justify an admission. The same barbiturate ends animals in local veterinary clinics; neither document extended the comparison. The substance does not change. The paperwork does. Measured in the state's preferred unit, the gap is two syringes. Measured in the hospital's, it is one patient.
Local coverage split along the same seam. Outlets reported that a death row inmate "survives execution attempt." In local usage, the verb survives attaches to storms, crashes, and wars. It is not a verb the briefing contained. A procedure that yields a survivor is incomplete by the state's definitions and successful by the hospital's. Neither definition was corrected against the other. The state's word for the interval between the second syringe and the hospital door was not available at press time.
The file closes in the state's own format. Row: Pike, Christa. Action ordered: terminate. Action observed: two syringes, one survival. Action in progress: preserve. Next action: terminate.
