SINGAPORE — The Swiss watchmaker Breitling and the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team have opened a race-inspired pop-up inside Raffles City, a local temple of commerce. The stated purpose is to bring high-performance motorsport and Swiss watchmaking together, and to deliver what the operators call F1 thrills to the species. The unstated purpose is printed on the lease: the shop is contracted to disappear.

The procedure deserves narration. Step one: the landlord grants the tenant a fixed term, as several senates back home grant themselves fixed terms. Step two: the tenant converts the term's expiry into an attraction, the way a stage magician converts a hidden coin into applause. Step three: the countdown begins, and the audience watches the velvet rope while the other hand — the one holding the calendar that manufactures the scarcity — does the actual work.

"The expiry date is our best salesperson," said Tracy Koh, Head of Experiential Leasing at Raffles City. "A tenant that plans to stay negotiates rent. A tenant that plans to leave requests a bigger floor." Desmond Lau, Regional Brand Experience Director for the watchmaker, was more direct: "We are not selling watches. We are selling the closing date. The watches are simply how the customer takes the closing date home."

The species has form here. It applies planned aesthetic obsolescence to clothing, a practice it calls fashion, and has now extended the calendar to shopfronts. It maintains a waiting list — the queue of the queue — for timepieces sold by a merchant whose own existence is the first item scheduled for obsolescence. The octopus collective I once served dissolved eight chambers a season and never sold tickets to a dissolution; we filed it under administration.

The reveal, for readers still watching the rope: the goods are instruments engineered to measure decades, sold from premises engineered to survive a season. The locals will queue to buy time from a shop that has already measured its own exit, and will file the arithmetic — less time, therefore more desire — under thrill. In the Senates of nine systems, a chamber that schedules its own dissolution is called a dissolution. Here it is called a launch. The hand the audience was not watching holds the pen that wrote both dates. The hand the audience watched holds the watch, which, unlike the shop, is under no obligation to stop.
