HIRSCHAID, BAVARIA — A school bus carrying 31 local children caught fire here. The driver brought every child to safety and was designated a hero, the colony's highest recorded rank. The bus burned out completely and received no rank. Our observation began at second 31, when the last sneaker left the rear step.

Second 52: child 6 of the former boarding order reattached herself behind child 5, unassisted. Minute 2: all 31 survivors stood in a single file on the asphalt, facing away from the fire, because facing toward it appears in no drill we have witnessed. Minute 9: the file produced its fourth apology, after child 19 stepped on child 18's heel during an evacuation both had just survived. The apology was accepted. The heel was not discussed again.

"We hold two line drills a year and one fire drill," said Brigitte Faltermeier, the school's appointed evacuation coordinator. "The children simply merged them. Frankly, it saved time." She confirmed that the fire itself had not been scheduled. Asked whether it might yet be, she said the question would "go to the calendar."

Edeltraud Simm, 71, a retired school secretary who observes the crossing most mornings, reached our conclusion before we could file it: "You can get a new bus by Friday. A line like that takes years." Petra Lohmeier collected child 11 at noon. "He came home and said, 'I was eleventh.' Not 'there was a fire.' Eleventh," she said. "We have decided to be proud."

At minute 12, one child left the file to watch the fire and was returned to position 20 by a classmate using a single gesture, entered in our notes as "the palm." No adult intervened; none was required. When the replacement bus arrived, the file re-formed in its original order, which no one had written down. A second, smaller line assembled behind child 31 for children the file could not yet hold — locals call this a waiting list, the queue of the queue. The children then thanked the driver individually, in strict queue order — 31 thanks, timed at four minutes — while the bus completed its own procedure.

We have embedded with this colony for three years and logged floods, festivals, and one election. The line is the only behaviour it has never once abandoned, including during fire. No child was burned. One was corrected.
