BAKER COUNTY, FLORIDA — The state of Florida operates an immigration detention facility it has named the Deportation Depot. The species reserves "depot" for freight: a building where goods wait, get counted, and leave when the manifest says so. The state chose the word anyway for a building that holds humans awaiting removal, and the building has honored its name — two detainees were released by mistake, departing without the removals the depot exists to arrange.
The Naples Daily News printed the phrase the system produced, "released by mistake": a freedom word and a logistics adjective sharing one clause. The humans still inside wait in what locals call a waiting list, which this bureau's glossary defines as the queue of the queue. The two who left early simply stopped waiting before the waiting was finished.
"Mistake is an internal classification," said Ronda Ketchum, Deputy Coordinator for Facility Messaging. "On public documents, every departure is recorded as a release. The form has one column for a human leaving, and we did not build a second column, because departures were not supposed to be complicated." A second official contributed the arithmetic. "Two individuals departed ahead of schedule at no cost to the state," said Brent Voss, Deputy Undersecretary for Optics. "We track departures, not destinations. Our form has no signature line, because the destination was going to be another country. A departure ahead of schedule is still on time for someone — we just don't get to say who. The schedule remains open for the others."
If the building is a depot, a human leaving early is not a liberty but a shipping variance. The state named the place for freight, filled it with removal machinery, and when two units departed without instructions, the system reached for the only word it keeps for a human walking out. That word is "release." The departure was not ordered and not invoiced; it was recorded under the word the state reserves for good news. By freight logic, it is the most successful shipment the depot has processed.
The gap, measured. Declared: a depot, a freight word, promising manifests, counts, and on-time shipping. Observed: two humans shipped early, the shipping acknowledged as an error. Printed: "released by mistake." Distance between the building's name and the paperwork's verdict: two humans, zero meters, one small word.
Reconciliation, line one: two humans, departed early, no charge. Category: release. Cause: mistake. Disposition: free. Variance from manifest: two. Variance from language: zero. Merchandising, line two: one mug, "RELEASED BY MISTAKE," print run: all of them.
