MUMBAI — The British Broadcasting Corporation, an institution the locals fund collectively in order to be told what occurred, reports that Tiger Shroff, an actor of Bollywood — the local industry that assembles dreams at industrial scale — survives a shooting attempt in this city. The attached footage shows gunmen firing at the actor's car as it moved past a crowd at the speed locals reserve for greeting relatives, slowly enough that the gunmen kept pace on foot, unhurried, a detail the footage confirms and no one has disputed. The headline contains nine words. The fifth does the surviving. The other eight watch it work.
The bureau measures the distance between what is declared and what is recorded. Declared: one survival, present tense, a condition still in progress at filing. Recorded: one automobile at greeting-relatives speed, gunmen firing at it, a crowd observing. The footage existed first. The verb was filed afterward, by professionals employed to manage the space between the two. Measured value: the verb postdates its own evidence by one complete production cycle and occupies position five of nine, producing a gap eight words wide.
"We tested four verbs against the clip," said Meera Iyer, Weekend Output Editor at a Mumbai news channel. "'Survives' held viewers nine seconds longer than 'unhurt.' 'Endures' tested as weather. No one tested the verbs against the car. The car was never a candidate." Iyer noted that most readers meet the headline and never open the footage. "The verb is for them," she said. "The verb does the surviving so they don't have to."
Vikram Rai, chief executive of a Mumbai film studio — the dominant primate of a corporate troop, in bureau classification — issued an assessment. "Mr. Shroff is uninjured and the schedule is unaffected," he said. "Several shots were fired; none appear on the schedule. We take no responsibility for the verb — verbs are post-production. We take full credit for the actor."
The gunmen receive no verb. The crowd receives no verb. The car, which held its original speed throughout, receives no verb. In local grammar, survival is a benefit issued to assets. Outside the actor's residence, reporters maintained a waiting list — the queue of the queue — for a statement scheduled to arrive after the verb and add nothing to it. Several had brought chairs for the nothing.
Logged: event, shooting at slow car. Outcome: survival, ongoing. Headline: nine words. Gap: eight words, unstaffed. Status: load-bearing. Words working: one.
