PARIS, FRANCE. After nights of unrest, Prime Minister Lecornu announced that the curfews had helped ensure the latest night passed calmly. The curfews were extended. The calm is now the official argument for the curfew, and the curfew the documented producer of the calm. Residents received both items in one briefing, with the arrest in Limoges attached as a footnote.

Our observation post opened at 20:45 on a street in the 11th arrondissement, shortly before presence there became reportable. The bakery operated a waiting list for its queue, the queue of the queue; the waiting list had opened a waiting list of its own, currently holding one name. Position 3 was held by a man buying two baguettes, one for tonight and, he said, "one for the version of tomorrow that is permitted." At 21:00 the shutters closed west to east in under four minutes, which the baker called "my fastest emptying in thirty-one years." At 21:22 the street produced its first apology, spoken by a resident to the officer watching him cross to his own door.

The arithmetic defends itself. An empty street has never rioted; these streets were empty; the night was therefore calm, by inspection. "You cannot align a street with its best behavior while the street is occupied," said Bernard Vasseur, Deputy Prefect for Night Continuity. "The calm is genuine. You may verify it. There is no one outside to dispute it."

The residents, on the whole, agree, which our field manual flags. "Before the curfew, the night belonged to whoever was in it, and some of them were setting things on fire," said Colette Marchal, retired schoolteacher and holder of position 3. "Now the night belongs to no one, and nothing is on fire. I sleep better than I have in years. I could not tell you what I am sleeping through."

One arrest was recorded in Limoges. The night was nonetheless filed as calm, the arrest sitting inside the tolerance of Form 12, Declaration of Calm, which permits one and was not asked to stretch. By 23:40 the count stood at four apologies, two cats, and one gendarme who consulted his watch eleven times in the half hour we observed him. The extension was signed citing the calm. The calm was confirmed by the extension.

The count closed at 06:00: six apologies, one arrest in Limoges, zero persons outdoors, and a calm entered into the record by the only method on file, which is absence. The curfew continues, so that a calm achieved by emptying the night may be preserved by keeping it empty. It is filed as the safest night in the prefecture's modern history. Attendance: zero.
