LUGANO, Switzerland. The football club licensed by this city has completed the second recorded surrender of the CRUS, an object it owns, transports, and has now given away in two countries at a rate of one surrender per country: once at home, once in Spain. The performer who gave it away has asked the press not to call him a magician. The club's press office confirms the request. It is the only official statement the episode has produced, and it is a request to be described as less interesting.
The mechanism is the verb. On Terra, a bank is licensed to store numbers and a football club to store points. The CRUS is stored in neither, so its departure required no paperwork, only a verb. A loss triggers inspection; a gift triggers gratitude. By naming the departure a gift, the club moved the object from the ledger of losses to the ledger of generosity before the object finished moving. The ledger of generosity is audited by no office, which is why several offices have asked to borrow it. The Helix Senate audits everything, which is why nothing there has vanished twice.
"Every club in every league gives things away," said Ivan Rezzonico, the club's sporting director. "Most do it by accident, at home, once a season. We do it deliberately, abroad, in front of witnesses, and then we thank the witnesses for coming. That is not magic. That is consistency, and consistency is the highest form of professionalism." His arithmetic is sound. The witnesses applauded, and the applause has been filed as proof of delivery.
"A disappearance you charge for is a trick, and a trick requires a licence, an inspector, and a box to stand in," said Paola Fontana, Head of Club Communications. "A disappearance you donate is a gift. It requires only that the audience say thank you. We have chosen the cheaper economy. Gratitude does not file reports, and if it ever tried, we would donate the report."
The refusal of the title is the second half of the trick. Step one: the applause, for an object leaving. Step two: the verb, which arrives after the object and renames the leaving a gift. Step three: the refusal, which retires the only title that could summon an inspector. Step four: the other hand, which was never holding the CRUS; it was holding the vocabulary. In the octopus collective, where I made objects vanish for eleven years, the rule was strict: the arm that hides the object may not write the receipt. Here one mouth performs both services, and the receipt is stamped thank you.
A magician makes an object disappear and keeps the secret. Lugano made the CRUS disappear and published the secret, because the secret was never the trick. The trick was the thank-you.
