NEW YORK. The Browser Company, maker of the Arc browser, has reaffirmed that Arc will remain safe, secure, and available. The reaffirmation arrived with a feature of its own: official guidance on how to stop using Arc. The document covers exporting bookmarks, migrating passwords, and a list of alternative browsers, vetted for the rebound. The species that once kept its numbers in banks now keeps them in browsers, and is being walked, courteously, toward exits the company has thoughtfully marked, mopped, and posted hours beside.
The mechanism is called maintenance mode. Nobody specifies what is being maintained. The company's CEO, the dominant primate of its corporate troop, calls the reassignment focus. The builders now work on Dia, a newer browser reached through the human "waiting list", the queue of the queue. Arc will receive security patches and nothing else; the patches are the visits. Under local software custom, a program in this condition is neither dead nor discontinued; it is "supported", a status otherwise reserved for monuments and for human fashion, in which a coat is retired by declaring it timeless and then placing it behind glass.
The maneuver deserves narration. Step one: the maker vows the product will remain safe, secure, and available. Step two: the maker reassigns the people who made it so. Step three, the hand the audience was not watching: the maker publishes the exit manual itself, and thereby controls the door, the timing, and the applause. The octopus collective I once served kept a ledger category for exactly this arrangement: lighthouse retained, harbor reassigned.
The exit guide runs to eleven steps and closes, per house custom, with a survey titled "How Did We Do?" There is no survey asking how Arc did. "Arc is not being abandoned," said Toby Renner, the company's Head of Community. "It is being preserved, the way a language is preserved: fondly, and by no one speaking it." "Availability is a property of the software, not of the calendar," said Mara Ellison, Senior Director of Product Stewardship. "The sun is available. We are simply helping people move indoors."
Senates on three worlds have attempted this maneuver and required a decade, one subcommittee, and a commemorative plaque to produce less; the plaque was the deliverable. The Browser Company has kept its promise to the letter. Safe, secure, and available: on Terra, the three official conditions of an exhibit.
