The bodies of four Italian service members arrived Monday at Ciampino air base, returned from Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Italian troops have served since the late 1990s under missions officially classified as peace support. President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stood on the tarmac with the families. The Republic is formally at war with no one, and yet the receiving protocol on display was, by local standards, complete.

A chamber of repose opened at the Palazzo del Celio, the seat of the Defense Ministry, with honors normally reserved for combat losses. Funerals were scheduled for Tuesday. The mechanism bears examination: the honor sequence does not consult the cause of death. A member of the species may expire in battle, in training, in weather, or in traffic, and the flag arrives at the same speed either way. The families are not consulted on this point because the families are not the audience. The audience is the distinction itself.

"Our people operate in theater without an adversary," a senior ministry official confirmed to this desk. "They are not at war. They simply deploy to places where dying remains available." Asked what killed the four, the official declined, citing an inquiry. The fallen are called fallen; no opponent has claimed responsibility for felling them.

Here the gap, measured. The ministry communiqué described an operational context free of hostilities and was released ninety minutes after the aircraft carrying the deceased touched down. During those ninety minutes the event existed and the description of it did not; the statement therefore postdated the coffins while continuing to speak of the mission in the present tense. The arithmetic holds: declared condition, peace. Issued honors, full. Distance between briefing and event, ninety minutes.

"The protocol cannot distinguish how one dies abroad," a colonel responsible for ceremony planning explained. "It distinguishes only whether the family receives a general or a colonel."

Both governments involved affirm no conflict exists. Both remain correct. Four citizens have now been lost to a war that does not exist, at a cost to the Republic of zero adversaries, and the paperwork has recorded both figures without noting the asymmetry. The ceremony follows the weapons home.
