The Tribunal of Asti has ruled that three young footballers raped a female student during celebrations for the promotion of the local club Bra, exploiting the stupefaction caused by alcohol. Fausto Perseu and Alessio Rosa received four years and two months. Jesus Christ Mawete received three years, eight months and twenty days. Note where the decimal points land: the court counted the men's debt in days. It recorded the woman's loss in no unit whatsoever, which on this desk is not an oversight but a filing decision.
The mechanism deserves note. Italian criminal law can only confiscate what a convicted person possesses, and what the young possess is time. Hence the precision: the twenty days separating Mawete's sentence from his co-defendants' were computed to the day, though nobody asked. "We bill in the only currency the State can seize," explained Avv. Gianluca Ferrero, counsel for one of the defendants. "The harm itself is not yet money. Courts cannot enter what is not yet money." He said this without visible discomfort, and correctly, which is worse.
The itemized account, reconstructed from the ruling: to the State, fifty months of Perseu, fifty months of Rosa, forty-six months and twenty days of Mawete. To the defendants, their own legal expenses. To the student, the remainder. The remainder contains her continued enrolment and tuition, the medical examinations, the testimony delivered in open court, and the years of procedure — all payable upon the debtor's initiative, since the remainder does not legally exist until she converts it into figures and deposits them with an institution licensed to store numbers. She is both creditor and accounts department.
Here the dimensions divide. The tribunal weighed the perpetrators' contribution with the tenderness of an apothecary, down to the twenty-day decimal. The victim's column requires a second trial, a second set of professionals, and a second wait, so that the sum may finally acquire the one property this system recognizes: being owed to somebody with standing to sue. On this desk we have observed that whatever a species declines to invoice, it eventually declines to see. Terra is consistent on this point. The paperwork is not incomplete. The paperwork was completed around her.
So the Asti court closed its books with three names, three durations, arithmetic exact to the day, every figure payable by the parties found liable — and the entire unpaid column assigned, by design, to the person the proceedings were conducted for. A pricing decision, executed flawlessly. The ledger, as ledgers here reliably do, balances. The question is why she had to buy the pen.
