On Monday, November 2, Bulgarian newspapers congratulated the republic on electing Iliana Iotova as its first woman president. Several columns lower, the same editions ran outside assessments calling the result a consolidation of power. Locals took both with coffee and saw no conflict; this desk measured the distance between the two items and found room for a third story neither paper wrote.
Iotova entered the presidency after two terms as vice president beside the incumbent, on a ticket assembled by the incumbent, carrying a platform endorsed by the incumbent. The press declared a rupture; the personnel chart declared a straight line. Neither document has been corrected, presumably because a correction would require each paper to name which of its own pages was mistaken.
The division of labor is acknowledged openly. A deputy editor of a Sofia daily explained: "The foreign reader wants the first. The domestic reader wants the continuity. Our front page serves both with the same photograph." Asked whether the paper felt obligated to reconcile the two stories, he said: "Reconciliation is the state's job. We are a newspaper."
Officialdom then adopted the arrangement on letterhead, describing the transition as "both a beginning and a continuation." The opposition was offered space to object and used it carefully. "To celebrate the first is history," one opposition figure told this desk. "To audit it is a scheduling decision." The reforms needed to tell the two apart remain on what locals call a waiting list, a queue maintained for the benefit of the queue.
The arithmetic, filed in the standard manner: at 07:14 the press declared a historic new era; at 07:19 the same press confirmed the preservation of existing arrangements. Declaration-to-record distance: five minutes. Rhetoric-to-staffing distance: two full terms. This bureau logs early arrivals as timing credits when our dispatches precede real events; Sofia's press arrived early for what proved, on inspection, to be furniture. Historic firsts logged: one. Changes otherwise detectable: zero. Photograph: unchanged. Locals call serving both versions at one table a balanced diet, and by that measure Monday was nutritionally complete.
