Item three concerns the extraction of the largest gold nugget ever recovered on Swiss territory, now on public display in Disentis/Mustér, in the Bündner Oberland. The dominant local primate lifted the object from the earth, carried it downhill, and sealed it behind glass, where residents now gather on schedule to observe it. As of filing, no participant had proposed returning it to circulation, the sole condition under which this species' economic units recognize gold as functional.
The mechanism deserves notation. Value here increases through non-use. "The day we sell it, it becomes money," said Andri Caduff, volunteer custodian of the collection. "Unsold, it is heritage." The nugget normally rests in the vault of a regional bank, an institution licensed to store numbers, which accepted custody of the metal on the reasoning that a number inside a mountain cannot rise.
"In the mountain it was free," said Lena Berther, deputy branch administrator. "Now we charge admission to visit it. The mountain never thought of that." Visitors are admitted in timed groups; overflow names are entered on a waiting list, which in local practice is the queue of the queue. The exhibit is insured for a figure the organizers declined to publish, apparently to prevent comparison with the mountain, which has insured itself at no cost since the last glacial retreat.
Recurrence risk: certain. The species has located precious metal for several millennia and has converted approximately none of it into bread. Remediation plan: continued periodic exhibition until the metal is understood, review scheduled upon the next discovery, deadline the subsequent ice age. This desk notes its own bureau has undergone six reorganisations since the last audit with equivalent measurable outcomes, a practice we log under continued optimisation.
Finding stands. The mountain lost the gold. The village gained a treasure. The second-largest nugget remains where it is, unguarded, uninsured, and unvisited — and per current valuation methodology, is therefore still worthless. A treasure, this desk concludes, is a rock with a waiting list.
