LENT, FRANCE. On Friday a regional line bus carrying forty-nine persons, several of them children, left the roadway here near the Swiss frontier. Two passengers did not survive: a child of seven and a passenger of eighteen. Others suffered grave injuries. The cause of the event is not yet known, and the species finds this acceptable, because the cause has been formally entered into a procedure.
The procedure operates as follows. The site is secured, the vehicle impounded, the witness statements gathered. Then the file acquires a reference number before it acquires a cause: Incident File 2025-0147-C, Circumstances Pending, a document I am told exists, though no citizen has seen one outside of litigation. Experts follow, then a judicial phase, then a technical report whose arrival is announced the way shipping timetables are announced: confidently, and in another season. The bereaved are meanwhile placed on what locals call a waiting list, which is the queue of those awaiting the outcome of the queue.
"Transparency is our obligation," a departmental transport officer assured this desk. "That is precisely why nothing can be said until it can be said." A municipal councillor went further: "The families will receive answers, in due order. Order matters. The answers arrive inside it." Both speakers were, by local standards, performing a service, and neither was lying, which is the most alarming part.
The trick merits full narration. Step one: the sirens, sincere. Step two: the perimeter tape, photogenic. Step three: the experts, credentialed and blameless. Step four: the calendar, the other hand, the thing no audience watches, working patiently to convert forty-nine interrupted biographies into an annex while attention decays on schedule. My former collective on Thal-Korr settled a transit fatality within a single tide, though in fairness we shared one memory across nine limbs and could not misplace it.
So I keep assuming an author: someone drafted File 2025-0147-C believing delay serves the living. It does not serve the dead, who have no filing status, and it does not serve the grieving, whose file is now the longest surviving evidence that the bus existed. The deadline, however, remains intact, and it is the only vehicle connected to this event guaranteed to depart on time.
