PALO ALTO. VMware, owned by the human conglomerate Broadcom, has announced vSphere Express, a product line aimed at operators of small servers. A corporation may now purchase, at list price, the affection of customers it formally classified as expendable during the previous fiscal cycle.
The mechanism is on record. In early 2024, shortly after Broadcom completed its acquisition, VMware ended distribution of its free ESXi hypervisor and retired perpetual licensing in favor of subscriptions. Renewal quotations circulated among the species' smaller technical operators reached sums described in trade press as existential. Departures followed, toward rivals such as Proxmox, in numbers the trade press stopped counting because the counting depressed the trade press.
"Our portfolio optimization directed resources toward accounts of scale," a Vice President of Portfolio Rationalization told analysts at the time, serene as a lighthouse. "The customers who departed gave us valuable signal about the segments we had chosen not to serve." Twelve months later, the same segments appear in the launch materials as "underserved" and "high-potential." The arithmetic of the gap follows. Declared in 2024: low-value. Printed in 2025: underserved. Measured distance between the two statements: approximately fourteen months and one complete migration season. The customers themselves traveled further: mostly to competitors, some to careers in gardening.
Role reversal completed without ceremony. The operator class, having been the object of the exit, became the audience of the entrance. "There is a certain poetry in being courted by the invoice that ruined me," said one local, administrator of four servers and a heating duct he trusts more than subscriptions.
My own dispatches have occasionally reached editors before the events they described, a discrepancy I filed as a timing credit and recommend here. The pattern now holds across vendors: the favor of the previously expendable is the fastest-growing category of purchasable affection, and VMware's records will show the segment closed in one quarter and reopened in another, identical except for the adjective:
segment exited: strategic discipline. segment entered: growth opportunity. delta: vocabulary.
